Hey everyone,
I've been following Neil for a few years, and learned a ton from this guy. If you haven't heard of him, just google him right now. I'm a firm believer he's one of the best marketers out there. Anyway, here's a summary of my notes.
Neil always seems to have 1,000 marketing tricks up his sleeve, but after studying him for a while, it's more than that.
I think it's 2 things:
- His brain is programmed differently vs average marketers
- He has a handful (3) core skills that allow him to dominate
Brain programming
Neil's brain is wired in a very special way
He always looks for the shortcut
This sounds bad, or maybe even lazy -- but the effect of this is that he comes up with new ways to do things.
It also allows him to think up grey hat tactics which give him an edge.
Example: grey hat SEO; instead of building links he'll buy links, etc
Actively seek out risks
In short, he is risk-seeking, while the majority of marketers / entrepreneurs are risk-averse.
He'll try things nobody else is trying, which means he'll get results nobody else is getting.
Example: his Instagram experiment where he paid bikini models to give him shoutouts
Blatantly rip off what's working
Again this one sounds bad, but it's only because he doesn't care about being original. Originality is overrated.
This allows him to execute faster. Build on what's working, don't re-invent the wheel.
Example: NeilPatel.com straight-up copying GrooveHQ's newsletter signup form
Pay it forward
There's a few competing narratives out there about how entrepreneurs should manage their time to maximize value created:
One is 'say no to everything, focus on your work' and another is 'keep adding value for others and the karma will return'
Neil definitely subscribes to the latter. That's why the man is so damn prolific.
Example: Eric Siu (Single Grain, GrowthEverywhere) who is now Neil's partner on a podcast, started off as a dude randomly emailing Neil for advice.
Anticipate Trends
This is the one I'm most impressed by, because it makes total sense when you think about it.
Neil re-publishes his content in 5 different languages -- because he's anticipating that digital marketing worldwide is going to mature.
And he's betting when when a big brand in Brazil is ready to spend $ on marketing consultants, they'll think of Neil Patel.
Example: aggressive translation of content. Neil says his Brazil traffic is almost at his US traffic. (wtf!)
Neil is pretty much an expert at every aspect of digital marketing, but I think he's got 3 superpowers.
Creating warm connections
He's super good at outreach and networking. Part of it is because he's prolific and wants to give back.
But part of it is because he knows how to write 'cold' emails that are really 'warm'. Which means he gets more conversions than anyone: backlinks, retweets, introductions.
Example: just see this email asking for a re-share
Using psychology to optimize
Neil's a CRO expert because he's run a zillion a/b tests ... AND because he knows that deep down, CRO is just about psychology and human behavior.
Example: trying to improve conversion on Kissmetrics' homepage, changed 'Sign up with Google account' -> 'Log in with Google account' (less intimidating; led to more clicks)
Building a following
Look, I spent about 40 hours writing this post about Neil, because I was such a big fan.
He's great at building a following -- because he's so aggressive at building his list.
But he's also great using that momentum to KEEP the following and turn them into loyal fans that talk about him.

Example: He spends $1,000 A DAY on Facebook ads to get people to Like his page (he has over 800k at time of writing)

The last piece of the puzzle
The most important thing about Neil?
He works like a maniac

This dude's idol is Elon Musk, yes that Elon Musk, who said that we should all be working 100 hours a week.
My conclusion?
It's possible to copy Neil and grab a piece of his success -- but you have to be ready to sweat for it.
Thanks for reading!
